What Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle?

If you've landed here because you searched "What is a Munchkin Bernedoodle?" you may be wondering why you've never heard of one.

There's a reason.

Munchkin Bernedoodle isn't an officially recognized breed or a universally standardized Doodle term.

It's the name we use at Boise Doodle Co. for a special type of Bernedoodle we produce using Bernedoodle, Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genetics.

And honestly?

They're one of my favorite combinations.

The goal is pretty simple:

Take qualities we love about Bernedoodles and combine them with some of the wonderful companion traits of the Cavalier—all while producing a more manageable size for families who don't necessarily want a large dog.

That's our Munchkin Bernedoodle.

What Breeds Are in a Munchkin Bernedoodle?

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles can include genetics from three breeds:

Bernese Mountain Dog + Poodle + Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The exact percentages can vary depending on the pairing and generation.

This isn't about randomly adding another breed to make something cute.

There's a purpose behind it.

Each breed can contribute different characteristics to the combination.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their beautiful structure, striking markings and devoted personalities.

They're also big dogs.

And not every family wants—or has room for—a 70-, 80- or 90-pound dog.

Poodle

Poodles bring intelligence, athleticism and coat characteristics that have made them an important part of Doodle breeding programs.

And despite what that fancy haircut may have convinced half the internet to believe, Poodles are seriously capable dogs.

They're smart.

Very smart.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Then we have the Cavalier.

This is where things get especially interesting.

Cavaliers are companion dogs.

They tend to adore their people and can bring a sweet, affectionate quality that I absolutely love.

Adding carefully selected Cavalier genetics gives us another tool when breeding for the type of companion dog we're trying to produce.

Why Add Cavalier to a Bernedoodle?

Because breeding should have a purpose.

I'm not interested in adding breeds simply so I can invent another cute name.

With our Munchkin Bernedoodles, we're intentionally working toward dogs that combine characteristics we value from all three breeds.

We're looking at things such as:

  • Companion temperament

  • Manageable adult size

  • Structure

  • Intelligence

  • Human focus

  • Trainability

  • Coat

  • Confidence

  • Ability to settle

The Cavalier influence can be especially appealing for families who love the idea of a Bernedoodle but want something a little more companion-oriented and potentially smaller.

How Big Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle?

This is one of the reasons we started using the word Munchkin.

They're intended to be a more manageable version of the Bernedoodle-type companion.

Depending on the pairing, our Munchkin Bernedoodles may mature in different size ranges.

But here's something important:

We don't guarantee an exact adult weight.

We use the parents, pedigree, genetics and previous offspring when available to estimate adult size.

Those predictions can be very good.

But Mother Nature does occasionally enjoy reminding breeders that she does not work for us. 😂

If adult size is especially important to your family, talk with us about the specific litter rather than relying solely on a label such as "mini."

Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle the Same as a Mini Bernedoodle?

Not necessarily.

A Mini Bernedoodle typically refers to a smaller Bernedoodle produced using Bernese Mountain Dog and smaller Poodle genetics, or later-generation Bernedoodles developed from those lines.

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles intentionally include Cavalier King Charles Spaniel influence in addition to Bernedoodle and Poodle genetics.

That's an important distinction.

So while both may fall into similar adult size ranges, they're not necessarily the same genetic combination.

When you're looking at any designer breed or cross, ask the breeder what's actually behind the puppy.

The name on the website only tells you so much.

Munchkin Bernedoodle vs. Cavapoo

This is where I think these dogs get really fun.

A Cavapoo combines Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Poodle.

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles can combine:

Cavalier + Poodle + Bernese Mountain Dog

So if you love Cavapoos but also find yourself completely obsessed with Bernedoodles, you can probably see where I'm going with this. 😂

The Munchkin gives us an opportunity to bring qualities from both combinations together.

That doesn't mean every Munchkin puppy will have the exact same personality.

They won't.

Individual temperament still matters tremendously.

But from a breeding standpoint, we have another way to select for the type of family companion we're trying to produce.

Munchkin Bernedoodle vs. Traditional Bernedoodle

Families sometimes love everything about a Bernedoodle except the potential adult size.

Or they want a dog with a little more emphasis on companion temperament.

That's where a thoughtfully bred Munchkin Bernedoodle may be worth considering.

A traditional Bernedoodle is based on:

Bernese Mountain Dog + Poodle

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles add:

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

That additional breed influence can change size, structure, coat and temperament.

Neither is automatically "better."

They're different.

The question is:

Which one fits your family?

What Are Munchkin Bernedoodles Like?

This is always the million-dollar question.

And I'd love to give you a tidy little list that describes every puppy perfectly.

But that's not how dogs work.

Within the same litter, we can have:

The confident explorer.

The cuddle bug.

The thinker.

The puppy who wants to follow me everywhere.

The independent one.

The puppy who believes every human was placed on Earth specifically to adore him.

That last one is usually pretty convincing. 😂

Our goal with Munchkin Bernedoodles is to produce intelligent, affectionate, people-oriented companions with stable temperaments.

But we still evaluate puppies as individuals.

Breed influences give us tendencies. They don't replace temperament evaluation.

Health Testing Matters With Three Breeds

This is incredibly important.

When you combine breeds, you don't get to ignore the health concerns from any of them.

You need to understand all of them.

For Munchkin Bernedoodles, that means considering health concerns associated with:

  • Bernese Mountain Dogs

  • Poodles

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Depending on the dogs involved, appropriate health testing may include DNA testing along with evaluations of hips, elbows, patellas, eyes, cardiac health and other breed-specific concerns.

At Boise Doodle Co., our breeding dogs are evaluated using health-testing tools that may include OFA, PennHIP, DNA testing and other breed-appropriate evaluations.

And families are always welcome to ask about the testing behind a particular pairing.

How Are Boise Doodle Co. Munchkin Bernedoodles Raised?

Our Munchkin Bernedoodle puppies are raised in our home and participate in the same intentional early-development program as our other puppies.

We incorporate concepts and practices from:

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

Puppy Culture

BAB

As puppies develop, we introduce age-appropriate handling, enrichment, grooming experiences, different surfaces, household noises, crate exposure, confidence-building activities and everyday life.

We're not trying to create a completely trained dog by eight weeks old.

That's not realistic.

We're building a foundation.

Who Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle Good For?

A Munchkin Bernedoodle may be worth considering if you:

  • Love Bernedoodles but prefer a more manageable size

  • Love Cavapoos but are also drawn to Bernedoodles

  • Want an intelligent, people-oriented companion

  • Appreciate the Bernedoodle look and personality

  • Want a dog bred with family companionship in mind

  • Are prepared for regular grooming

  • Want breeder guidance when choosing temperament

But don't choose one simply because the name is adorable.

Yes, I realize Munchkin Bernedoodle isn't exactly helping my argument there. 😂

Choose based on whether the individual puppy and the traits behind the pairing fit your life.

Where Can I Find Munchkin Bernedoodle Puppies?

Because Munchkin Bernedoodle is the term we use for this particular type of breeding within our program, you aren't necessarily going to find them everywhere.

I'm Laura, the breeder behind Boise Doodle Co., located in Caldwell, Idaho, in the Boise/Treasure Valley area.

Our breeding philosophy is built around:

Health. Temperament. Structure. Early development. And thoughtful puppy matching.

Or, in even simpler terms:

People Before Puppies.

We work with families throughout Idaho—including Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Middleton, Caldwell and Nampa—as well as families across the United States.
