Health Concerns to Look Out For…

Parvovirus

Parvo is one of the most dangerous and misunderstood puppy illnesses. It is highly contagious, environmentally persistent, and emotionally devastating. This page exists to educate puppy owners, explain prevention strategies, and clearly outline expectations—especially in high-risk parvo regions.

Our area, here in Idaho is a very high risk area.

Giardia

Giardia duodenalis (Giardia for short) is a parasite. Illness caused by Giardia is called giardiasis.

Giardia lives in the gut of infected people and animals and comes out of the body in poop. Giardia can survive for weeks to months outside the body (for example, in soil).

Giardia is found in every region of the United States and around the world.

Coccidia

Coccidia is a common microscopic protozoan parasite of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Healthy adult dogs rarely develop diarrhea from coccidia, but puppies are commonly affected. Coccidia infections are caused by contact with contaminated feces, directly or in the environment, or ingesting prey animals. Dogs with clinical signs are treated with a prescription medication.
