And honestly?

Schnoodles deserve more credit.

But finding a Schnoodle puppy isn't just about finding someone who happens to have a litter available.

The Schnauzer and Poodle parents, health testing, temperament, size, generation and how those puppies are raised can make a tremendous difference in the dog you eventually bring home.

Here's what I'd look for when searching for a reputable Schnoodle breeder in Idaho.

What Is a Schnoodle?

A Schnoodle is a cross involving a Schnauzer and a Poodle.

Sounds simple enough.

Except there's quite a bit of variation hiding inside that one word.

Schnauzers come in different sizes.

So do Poodles.

Then you have different generations and breeding combinations.

That means Schnoodles can range from small companion dogs to substantially larger dogs depending on the parents involved.

So when someone tells you:

"It's a Schnoodle."

Your next question should probably be:

"Okay...what kind?" 😂

How Big Do Schnoodles Get?

This is one of the first questions families ask me.

And the answer is:

It depends on the parents.

When researching Schnoodle puppies, don't rely solely on labels like "toy," "mini" or "standard."

Ask for actual numbers.

How much does Mom weigh?

How much does Dad weigh?

How tall are they?

What sizes have previous puppies from these lines reached as adults?

What does the breeder realistically expect from this litter?

A breeder can use parent size, pedigree and previous offspring to make an educated prediction.

But we can't guarantee your puppy will mature to exactly 14.7 pounds.

Genetics refuses to read our spreadsheets.

Rude, honestly. 😂

What Health Testing Should Schnoodle Breeders Do?

Because a Schnoodle combines Schnauzer and Poodle genetics, responsible breeders need to consider the health concerns found in both breeds.

That's why simply saying, "Our dogs are DNA tested," doesn't tell you everything you need to know.

DNA testing is a valuable tool.

But depending on the breeds and individual dogs involved, responsible health screening may also include evaluations such as:

• Hips

• Patellas

• Eyes

• Cardiac health

• Breed-specific genetic conditions

At Boise Doodle Co., our breeding dogs are evaluated using health-testing tools that may include OFA evaluations, PennHIP, DNA genetic testing and other breed-appropriate testing.

And here's my recommendation whenever you're talking to a breeder:

Ask to see the results.

You aren't being difficult.

You're doing your homework.

A responsible breeder should appreciate that.

F1, F1b and Multigenerational Schnoodles

You'll probably see terms like F1 Schnoodle, F1b Schnoodle and multigenerational Schnoodle while researching puppies.

An F1 Schnoodle is generally a first-generation cross between a Schnauzer and Poodle.

An F1b Schnoodle typically involves breeding an F1 Schnoodle back to a Poodle or Schnauzer.

A multigenerational Schnoodle comes from later-generation breeding where one or both parents are already Schnoodles or part of an intentionally selected breeding combination.

Why does generation matter?

It can help breeders make predictions about things like:

• Coat

• Furnishings

• Shedding

• Size

• Structure

• Appearance

But don't choose a puppy based on generation alone.

Generation is information. It isn't a guarantee.

The actual parents and genetics behind the puppy matter much more than a fancy collection of letters.

What Are Schnoodles Like?

This is where they get fun.

Both Schnauzers and Poodles are intelligent breeds.

Put those genetics together and you can get some seriously clever little dogs.

That intelligence can make Schnoodles incredibly engaging and trainable companions.

It can also mean they'll notice approximately everything happening in your house. 😂

Individual temperament varies, of course, but Schnoodles can be:

Some are little comedians.

Some want to follow you everywhere.

Some are more independent.

This is why I care so much about evaluating the individual puppy, not simply selling someone "a Schnoodle."

Temperament Should Matter More Than Color

Color is fun.

I get it.

We all have colors and markings that immediately catch our eye.

But when you're choosing the dog who will live in your house for the next decade or more, temperament needs a seat much closer to the front of the bus.

Ask your breeder:

Is this puppy confident?

Human-focused?

Independent?

Busy?

Easygoing?

Thoughtful?

Food motivated?

Quick to recover from new experiences?

Comfortable with handling?

Able to settle?

There's no universally perfect answer.

A highly confident, active puppy might be incredible for one household and completely overwhelming for another.

The goal isn't finding the "best puppy."

It's finding the puppy who fits your life.

How Should Schnoodle Puppies Be Raised?

Genetics provides the foundation, but those first weeks of life are incredibly important.

At Boise Doodle Co., our puppies are raised in our home and participate in intentional, age-appropriate early development.

Our program incorporates concepts and practices from Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), Early Scent Introduction (ESI), Puppy Culture and BAB.

As puppies develop, they're introduced to experiences such as:

• Regular handling

• Grooming exposure

• Different surfaces and textures

• Household sounds

• New objects

• Toys and enrichment

• Age-appropriate problem solving

• Crate exposure

• Confidence-building activities

• Appropriate independence

• Everyday household life

We aren't trying to cram an entire lifetime of experiences into eight weeks.

Puppies need appropriate challenges, rest and time to develop.

The goal is to start creating positive associations with new experiences and help puppies build confidence.

Grooming a Schnoodle

This is something families should understand before bringing one home.

Schnoodles require grooming.

Exactly how much will depend on the individual dog's coat, but if you're bringing home a furnished puppy with a soft, fluffy coat, plan for regular maintenance.

That can include:

• Brushing and combing at home

• Nail trims

• Ear care

• Bathing and drying

• Professional grooming on a regular schedule

One reason we introduce puppies to grooming and handling early is because this isn't an occasional event.

It's part of life.

A fluffy teddy-bear coat is adorable.

The teddy bear does, unfortunately, require maintenance. 😂

Red Flags When Looking for Schnoodle Puppies in Idaho

• Health testing can't be documented.

• The breeder can't explain the temperament of Mom and Dad.

• They guarantee an exact adult weight.

• They promise the puppy will never shed.

• There's little information about how puppies are raised.

• There's no meaningful contract or health guarantee.

• They don't ask anything about your family or lifestyle.

• They seem more interested in collecting a deposit than making a good match.

You should feel comfortable asking questions.

And your breeder should probably be asking some questions about you, too.
