People Before Puppies: Why Finding the Right Family Matters More Than Selling a Puppy

People Before Puppies.

I say it a lot.

And no, it doesn’t mean the puppies aren’t incredibly important to me. If you’ve followed Boise Doodle Co. for approximately 14 seconds, you already know how much I love these dogs.

It means something bigger.

Because exceptional dogs begin with exceptional relationships.

Breeding dogs is obviously about dogs. Genetics matter. Health testing matters. Temperament matters. Early socialization matters. How puppies are raised during those first critical weeks matters tremendously.

But eventually, every puppy I raise leaves my home and becomes part of someone else’s life.

And that is where the human part becomes everything.

I’m Not Raising Puppies for Today

I could look at every puppy as a transaction.

Someone wants a puppy. I have a puppy. Money changes hands. Puppy goes home.

Easy.

But that has never been what I want Boise Doodle Co. to be.

I’m not raising puppies for today. I’m helping create forever families.

When I look at one of my puppies, I’m thinking about the next 10, 12, 15 years.

Who will this dog wake up beside?

Who will take them on walks?

Who will laugh at their ridiculous quirks?

Who will take care of them when they're sick?

Who will they comfort during one of the hardest days of that person's life?

Who will they grow old beside?

Dogs have an incredible ability to become woven into our lives in ways we never expected.

They aren't accessories.

They become family.

And that deserves more thought than, “Which puppy is the cutest?”

Because, let's be clear, they're all cute. That part is terribly inconvenient. 😂

The Right Puppy Matters More Than the Prettiest Puppy

Color is fun.

Size matters.

Coat type can matter.

And yes, sometimes you see a puppy's picture and immediately think, THAT ONE.

I get it.

But temperament and lifestyle compatibility matter so much more.

Some families need a confident little adventure buddy who can handle kids, travel and a busy household.

Someone else may need a quieter, affectionate dog who is perfectly happy hanging out beside them while they work from home.

Another person may travel frequently and need a smaller dog who adapts easily to new environments.

A family with another dog has different considerations than someone bringing home their first puppy.

There isn't one universally "best" puppy.

There is a puppy who may be best for you.

That's why I ask questions.

Actually, I ask a lot of questions. 😂

I want to know about your family, your lifestyle, your other animals, your experience with dogs, what you're hoping for and what you absolutely don't want.

I'm not interrogating you.

I'm trying to help you make a really good decision.

Why Boise Doodle Co. Has an Application Process

I know.

Applications aren't particularly exciting.

You came here for puppies and suddenly I've assigned homework.

But there's a reason.

A responsible breeder should care where their puppies are going.

My application is the beginning of a conversation—not a contest you have to "pass."

I want to understand what you're looking for so I can tell you whether I genuinely believe I have a dog that fits your life.

And sometimes that means I will tell someone:

I don't think this puppy is the right fit for you.

That may not make me the fastest salesperson.

I'm completely okay with that.

Because a puppy being available doesn't automatically mean that puppy belongs in every home.

Good placement matters.

People Before Puppies Also Means Transparency

I don't believe responsible breeding requires pretending everything is perfect.

Dogs are living animals.

Genetics are complicated.

Breeding is complicated.

Life is complicated.

Responsible breeders should health test their breeding dogs, thoughtfully plan pairings, raise puppies intentionally, educate families and be transparent about what they know.

And when something isn't perfect?

We talk about that too.

I would rather have an honest conversation with someone than tell them exactly what they want to hear just to make a sale.

Trust matters to me.

And trust is built through transparency—not perfection.

Health Testing Is Important. So Is Everything Around It.

When people search for a responsible or reputable dog breeder, health testing should absolutely be part of that conversation.

But I don't believe responsible breeding can be reduced to a checklist.

Health testing matters.

Genetics matter.

Temperament matters.

How the parents live matters.

How puppies are raised matters.

Early neurological stimulation and intentional exposure matter.

Socialization matters.

Nutrition matters.

Veterinary care matters.

The breeder's knowledge matters.

And the relationship between the breeder and the family matters.

You aren't buying a collection of health-test results.

You're bringing home a living, breathing little creature who will depend on you for everything.

I take that seriously.

My Responsibility Doesn't End on Go-Home Day

Go-home day is exciting.

There are pictures.

There are kisses.

There are usually some tears.

And then you drive away with your puppy.

But I don't disappear.

Because that's actually when a whole new part of our relationship begins.

You're going to have questions.

Your puppy may decide that sleeping at 2:17 a.m. is completely unnecessary.

They may suddenly forget every single thing they appeared to know yesterday.

They might eat something they absolutely should not eat.

Welcome to puppies. 😂

I want my families to know they can reach out.

Sometimes you need training advice.

Sometimes you need reassurance.

Sometimes you need help figuring out whether something is normal.

And sometimes life changes in ways nobody could have predicted.

My commitment to my dogs doesn't expire when they leave my home.

Sometimes a Dog Becomes More Than We Ever Imagined

This may be the biggest reason People Before Puppies means so much to me.

I've watched dogs become companions during grief.

I've seen them help children find confidence.

I've watched them bring joy back into homes that desperately needed some.

They become travel buddies, hiking partners, couch potatoes, comedians, best friends and little shadows who somehow believe going to the bathroom alone is a dangerous activity.

Dogs don't care about your résumé.

They don't care how much money you make.

They don't care whether you had a terrible day.

They don't care whether you feel like you've got your life completely together.

They just show up.

Again and again.

And sometimes a dog walks into someone's life at exactly the moment that person needs them.

That's bigger than selling puppies.

I Want to Know the Humans Who Love My Dogs

One of my favorite things is hearing from families months or years later.

I love the updates.

I love watching puppies grow up.

I love hearing the ridiculous stories.

I love seeing vacations, birthdays, first haircuts, adventures and dogs sprawled across furniture their owners swore they would never be allowed on.

And I especially love hearing someone say:

"This dog changed our life."

That's the goal.

Not simply getting puppies out the door.

Not collecting deposits.

Not chasing numbers.

Creating relationships that last.

What I Hope You Look for in Any Breeder

Whether you ever get a puppy from Boise Doodle Co. or not, I hope you choose your breeder carefully.

Ask questions.

Look for health testing.

Ask how puppies are raised.

Ask about temperament.

Ask what happens after you take your puppy home.

Pay attention to whether the breeder asks questions about you, too.

A responsible breeder shouldn't only be interested in whether you're ready to pay for a puppy.

They should care whether one of their puppies belongs in your life.

You deserve that.

And the puppy certainly does too.

I want healthy dogs.

Beautiful dogs.

Dogs with wonderful temperaments.

Dogs raised intentionally from their very first days.

But ultimately, I want something even bigger.

I want those dogs to become deeply loved members of incredible families.

Because the puppy isn't the finish line.

The relationship is.

That's what I'm building here.
