The Best Part of Breeding Dogs? The People I Meet Along the Way

I started breeding dogs because I love dogs.

That part probably isn't shocking. 😂

I grew up with animals. They have always been a huge part of my life, and I understand just how much a really great dog can add to a family.

But somewhere along the way, something happened that I didn't fully expect.

I fell in love with the people, too.

The families who trust me with this incredibly important decision.

The moms who send me pictures six months later.

The couples who drive hours to pick up their new best friend.

The families who come back for puppy number two—and sometimes number three.

The people who send me a message years later just to tell me how much their dog means to them.

Those relationships have changed the way I look at being a dog breeder.

Because I've realized something:

The very best part of raising incredible puppies is watching them become somebody else's incredible dog.

A Responsible Dog Breeder Doesn't Just Choose Dogs

When people talk about finding a responsible dog breeder, the conversation usually revolves around the dogs.

And it should.

Responsible breeding includes thoughtful pairings, genetic testing, appropriate health testing, temperament, structure, veterinary care, early puppy development and intentional socialization.

All of that matters enormously at Boise Doodle Co.

But there's another piece of responsible dog breeding that I don't think gets talked about enough.

The humans.

Every puppy I raise eventually becomes part of someone's family.

That's why I'm not simply deciding which dogs to breed.

I'm also helping decide where the puppies I bring into this world will spend their lives.

That responsibility matters to me.

A lot.

My Clients Aren't Just Puppy Buyers

I actually don't love the term "puppy buyer."

Technically? Sure.

But it doesn't come close to describing the relationship.

These are the humans who will love the dogs I brought into this world.

They're going to celebrate birthdays with them.

They're going to take them camping, hiking and traveling.

They're going to sneak them bites of food when nobody is looking.

They're going to buy approximately 47 toys even though their dog prefers the empty cardboard box.

They're going to take care of them when they're sick.

They're going to laugh because their dog has claimed an entire king-size bed while somehow weighing twelve pounds.

And someday, hopefully many years from now, they're going to hold that dog while saying goodbye.

That's not a transaction.

That's family.

I Have Some Seriously Amazing Puppy Families

I wish people could see some of the messages I receive.

Actually, I share quite a few of them because I'm proud of these families.

I hear about puppies who are thriving in training.

Dogs traveling across the country with their families.

Puppies who have become best friends with children.

Dogs who helped someone through grief.

Dogs who gave someone companionship during a lonely season.

Dogs who simply walked into a home and somehow made everything feel a little more complete.

And then there are the updates that make me laugh out loud.

The stolen socks.

The ridiculous sleeping positions.

The first grooming appointment.

The puppy who has clearly taken over the household despite everyone insisting beforehand that, "We're going to have rules."

Sure you are. 😂

I love all of it.

Because every update reminds me that the work we're doing during those first weeks of a puppy's life is only the beginning of their story.

Great Puppy Families Don't Have to Be Perfect

Here's something else I think is important.

I'm not looking for perfect people.

They don't exist.

And if they do, frankly, they'd probably make me nervous.

I'm looking for committed people.

People willing to learn.

People who understand that puppies require patience.

People who know training takes consistency.

People who recognize that bringing home a dog is a commitment measured in years—not weeks.

You don't have to know everything about raising a puppy.

That's part of why I'm here.

But you do need to be willing to show up.

The families I love working with aren't perfect dog owners.

They're invested dog owners.

There's a big difference.

Choosing the Right Puppy Is Personal

One of the reasons I spend time getting to know my families is because choosing the right puppy isn't simply about picking your favorite color.

When someone contacts Boise Doodle Co. looking for a Mini Bernedoodle, Cavapoo, Schnoodle, Poodle or another one of our puppies, I want to understand the life that puppy is walking into.

Do you have children?

Other dogs?

Do you travel?

Are you looking for an adventure buddy or a professional couch potato?

Do you want a tiny dog you can easily take everywhere?

Are you hoping for a therapy or service prospect?

What energy level works in your household?

What characteristics matter most to you?

Those answers help us look beyond the cutest photograph and think about compatibility.

Because I don't just want you to love your puppy on go-home day.

I want you to still be telling me years later:

The Breeder Relationship Shouldn't End at Go-Home

Finding a reputable dog breeder isn't only about what happens before you bring your puppy home.

Ask what happens afterward.

Because that's when the real adventure begins.

Puppies are adorable.

They're also tiny, fluffy agents of chaos with absolutely no concern for your sleep schedule.

There will be questions.

There will be training challenges.

There may be moments when you're wondering whether your puppy has completely forgotten everything they learned yesterday.

Probably.

Welcome to puppyhood. 😂

My relationship with Boise Doodle Co. families doesn't end when they leave with their puppy.

I want the updates.

I want the questions.

I want to celebrate the wins.

And when something is hard, I want families to know they can reach out.

That relationship is part of responsible breeding, too.

Some Families Come Back Again

One of the greatest compliments a breeder can receive isn't a five-star review.

Although, listen, I appreciate those too. 😂

It's when a family comes back.

When someone who already has one of my dogs trusts me enough to bring another Boise Doodle Co. puppy into their family, that means something to me.

They've lived with one of my dogs.

They've experienced my program beyond the pretty puppy pictures.

They know me.

And they still come back.

That kind of trust isn't something I take lightly.

And Some Relationships Last for Years

This business has allowed me to meet people I probably never would have known otherwise.

Different states.

Different careers.

Different families.

Different stories.

We may have started talking because they wanted a puppy.

But sometimes that conversation turns into years of updates, messages and friendship.

I've watched families grow.

I've watched children grow up beside their dogs.

I've celebrated milestones from afar.

I've received heartbreaking messages when life got hard.

And I've seen, over and over again, how deeply these dogs become connected to the humans who love them.

That's one of the reasons People Before Puppies became such an important part of Boise Doodle Co.

It's not a marketing slogan.

It's a philosophy.

Yes, I am ridiculously proud of the dogs we produce.

I'm proud of the intentional breeding decisions.

I'm proud of our health testing.

I'm proud of the work that goes into raising and socializing our puppies.

I'm proud of the beautiful Mini Bernedoodles, Cavapoos, Schnoodles, Poodles and other dogs that leave here.

But I'm equally proud of where they go.

I'm proud of the humans on the other side of the leash.

The families who train them.

The families who protect them.

The families who spoil them a little.

Okay, sometimes a lot.

The families who make them part of birthdays, Christmas mornings, vacations, ordinary Tuesdays and every little moment in between.

My puppies may carry the Boise Doodle Co. name for a few months.

But they carry their families' hearts for the rest of their lives.

That's the part that matters.
